MINNESOTA LAWYER NAMES UNGER A 2015 “ATTORNEY OF THE YEAR”.
For the fourth time since Minnesota Lawyer began recognizing “Attorneys of the Year” in 1999, the newspaper has once again named Mike Unger an “Attorney of the Year”. He was also named again to the “Circle of Excellence” because of his repeated selections for this annual honor. You may read the announcement of 2015 awardees here. Mr. Unger currently serves as the President of the Minnesota State Bar Association and helped to adopt an innovative new committee structure to better allow MSBA to represent the views of the legal profession to the Supreme Court in matters of rules and policies that govern Minnesota’ s justice system.

MICHAEL UNGER ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE MINNESOTA STATE BAR ASSOCIATION
Mike Unger was named President of the 15,000 member Minnesota State Bar Association. The MSBA is the largest organization of lawyers in the State of Minnesota and represents lawyers from all parts of the state and areas of practice. MSBA works to improve and support the legal profession and legal system, and to improve access to justice for all. As President, Mr. Unger serves as the Chief Executive Officer of MSBA.

For seven years in a row, the national publication, The Best Lawyers in America has named Michael Unger as a “Best Lawyer” in the area of personal injury law in Minnesota. The selection is made based upon a vote of other lawyers who were similarly recognized. The 2014, 2015 and 2016 editions are the 20th through 22nd Editions of The Best Lawyers in America. According to Steven Naifeh, President of The Best Lawyers in America, Mr. Unger has “proven to be a consistent and dedicated member of the law community” whose recognition is an “exclusive selection by your peers as one of the best in your specialty”.
MIKE UNGER RECOGNIZED FOR PRO BONO WORK
The Minnesota State Bar Association formally recognized nearly 750 Minnesota lawyers for their annual contributions of 50 or more hours of free legal service to the disadvantaged through the creation of a new program known as the Northstar Lawyers. Mike Unger was among the lawyers named and recognized for this service. In addition, the President of the MSBA also conferred the MSBA’s President Award on each of the charter members of the Northstar Lawyer program. The code of ethical conduct governing lawyer professional responsibility includes a rule that encourages each lawyer to contribute at least 50 hours per year to legal assistance to the disadvantaged.
MIKE UNGER JOINS LEGAL BLOG AS GUEST CONTRIBUTOR
The well regarded Minnesota legal blog, Minnesota Litigator, has announced its inclusion of Mike Unger, Unger Law Office, as a guest contributor. The blog provides news and commentary about Minnesota legal matters. It features a variety of contributors with various types of legal expertise. Mike is the first and only contributor whose experience is in personal injury law. His first contributions address the recent medical malpractice appeal before the Minnesota Supreme Court in Dickhoff v. Green.
STATE BAR ASSOCIATION NAMES MICHAEL UNGER AS SECRETARY
Minnesota’s largest professional organization of lawyers, the Minnesota State Bar Association, recently elected Michael W. Unger of Unger Law Office in Minneapolis to be the organization’s Secretary for 2012-2013. As an officer, it is expected that Mr. Unger will move through the rotation of officer positions and, if so, will become the President of the Bar Association for 2015-16.
UNGER RECEIVES COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
On June 6, 2012 the Hennepin County Bar Foundation honored Michael W. Unger of Unger Law Office with its “President’s Award”. The award is recognition of the dedication and service provided by Mr. Unger as a volunteer of the Foundation, and for his community service. The Hennepin County Bar Foundation is dedicated to promotion of access to legal services, improvement of the justice system and education of the public about the legal system. Mr. Unger is a certified Civil Jury Trial specialist who represents victims of personal injury and wrongful death.

Minnesota Lawyer, the leading newspaper in Minnesota dedicated to coverage of legal events, held its annual “Attorney of the Year” recognition in February at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Minneapolis lawyer Michael Unger, along with attorney Thomas Fraser, were recognized for their Outstanding Service to the Profession because of their leadership in establishing “Call For Justice, LLC”, a new legal referral service designed to assist the disadvantaged in need of legal help. Mr. Unger was also named to the Circle of Excellence, a special recognition for repeat recipients of the Attorney of the Year award. Unger was also named Attorney of the Year for 2003, and 2006. His law practice focuses on the representation of injured persons and the families of victims of wrongful death. He has received “Attorney of the Year” recognition more than any other injury lawyer in Minnesota.

Minnesota’s Board of Lawyers Professional Responsibility recently elected Michael Unger as Vice Chair of the Board. Mr. Unger has served on the Lawyer’s Board since his initial appointment by the Minnesota Supreme Court in 2008. He has served on the Executive Committee since 2010. The Lawyer’s Board is charged by the Minnesota Supreme Court with oversight and policy responsibilities in governing the state’s professional discipline and regulation of the legal profession.
UNGER NAMED IN 2011 EDITION OF “BEST LAWYERS IN AMERICA”
Publishers of the nationally renowned “Best Lawyers in America”, Woodward-White, have announced selection of attorneys for the 2011 edition and have once again selected Michael Unger of Minneapolis to be included in the specialty area of Personal Injury Litigation. This selection is based upon a peer review process in which other lawyers are asked to respond to “an exhaustive and rigorous peer-review survey comprising more than 3.1 million confidential evaluations by the top attorneys in the country”, according to Steven Neifeh, Editor-in Chief, of the The Best Lawyers in America. The lawyers selected from Minnesota are featured annually in a special section of Minnesota Monthly magazine.

STATE BAR NAMES UNGER TO RECEIVE ITS
“PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD”
The Minnesota State Bar Association, in its 2009 Annual Convention in Duluth, Minnesota, awarded Michael Unger its “Professional Excellence” Award in recognition of his representation of the family of a victim of the August 2007 collapse of the I-35W Bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The award is given annually by the Bar Association to mark special distinction achieved by lawyers in advancing the profession and serving the interest of justice. The bridge collapse, which resulted in worldwide attention and concern, resulted in 13 deaths and over one hundred injuries. The “Professional Excellence Award”, conferred by State Bar President Michael Ford during the Annual Convention, reads: ”In recognition of outstanding efforts to advance the legal profession and the administration of justice.” The award was granted to Unger and other attorneys who served either as Special Masters, or represented victims on a pro bono basis, as part of the process of special compensation established by the State of Minnesota for bridge collapse victims.
UNGER NAMED AGAIN AS TOP 40 PERSONAL INJURY SUPER LAWYER
Once again Michael Unger was named one of the “Top 40 Personal Injury Super Lawyers” by Minnesota Law and Politics magazine. The magazine annually polls thousands of Minnesota lawyers and asks them who they would refer their clients to in various areas of the law. The poll results are also vetted by a “Blue Ribbon” panel of lawyers to help finalize the selection of “Super Lawyers”. Unger has repeatedly been selected as a Super Lawyer for many years, and in recent years has also been named to the more select list of the “Top 40 Personal Injury Super Lawyers.“ Only Law and Politics annual “SuperLawyer” poll reaches to thousands of lawyers to ask for their recommendation. Unger received this recognition by Minnesota Law & Politics magazine in the prior year as well. He has been named by the magazine as a “Minnesota Super Lawyer” every year of the past decade.
