About Us

Excellence. Service. Integrity.

These are the ingredients of quality legal representation. These are the core values upon which the Unger Law Office is founded.

Lawyers are like all other people, they come with all degrees of experience and effectiveness at what they do. To know whether you have an excellent attorney, look for signs of recognition of that excellence by other lawyers, or other publications.

_DSC0008Mike Unger is an honors graduate of a law school that is repeatedly ranked as one to the top twenty law schools in America. Since law school, he has gone on to be one of only a handful of injury lawyers in Minnesota recognized more than once by the Minnesota Lawyer newspaper as one of their “Attorneys of the Year”. Mike was so honored in 2003 and 2006 for specific multi-million dollar recoveries on behalf of his clients and for service to the community and the law profession. In 2012, the same newspaper honored him with their Outstanding Service to the Profession Award, due to his commitment and work to help improve access to justice in our community. Most recently, he was named “Attorney of the Year” for his service as President of the Minnesota State Bar Association.  The magazines Minnesota Law & Politics and Mpls.St.Paul have annually selected hundreds of “Super Lawyers” in the personal injury area by polling thousands of lawyers in the state, Mike Unger has been included in that list every year since the 1990s . In recent years they have also culled that list to specify their “Top 40.” Mike has been selected to the “Top 40 Personal Injury Attorneys” list every year published since 2005. Beginning in 2010, Mike has also been selected for excellence in personal injury representation in every edition of “The Best Lawyers in America,” published by Woodward & White.

Client service is always important, but it is especially important in personal injury law. Often the pain and difficulties that come with injuries can be overwhelming. A lawyer who understands that, and is committed to lightening the burden of the client, is critical. Mike routinely meets clients when and where their situation requires. “House calls” are alive and well and always available to clients who need that level of service. Another hallmark of service is personal and prompt attention. Phone calls from Mike’s clients are not screened by his employees. He is committed to direct communication and only uses his support staff for contact if the client prefers.

Service is more than just client service. You know you have a lawyer you can count on when they have a proven record of community service as well. Mike has a long and demonstrated history of community service, from serving as the Hennepin County Bar Association president to volunteering for the United Way or Habitat for Humanity to serving as leader of his church board. He has a long history of providing pro bono legal service as well. Most recently, in 2009, the Minnesota State Bar Association honored Mike and other lawyers with their “Professional Excellence Award” because of their pro bono representation of the victims of the 2007 I-35W Bridge collapse in Minneapolis. In 2012, the Minnesota Lawyer newspaper recognized Mike for Outstanding Service due to his work to create “Call For Justice, LLC”, working to provide a telephone “hotline” legal service to the disadvantaged.

Your lawyer reflects on you. A reputation for integrity is a critical asset for anyone you choose to represent you. Such a reputation can help to bring your cause instant credibility. While it is easy to claim integrity, experience tells us it is hard earned and not easily determined. When selecting a lawyer, consider looking to those facts which may help you determine a reputation for integrity. One possible clue is the degree to which the courts themselves look to a lawyer for guidance or advice.

The Supreme Court of Minnesota appointed Mike to serve on the Lawyer’s Professional Responsibility Board, which is charged with overseeing the enforcement of rules governing lawyer’s professional ethics in Minnesota.

Mike has served the courts of Minnesota in other ways as well. For twelve years, Mike served on the Minnesota Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on the Rules of Civil Procedure. This committee studies and recommends changes in the way that the court should handle claims for money damages or injunctions, known as civil cases. The Federal Court of Minnesota has asked Mike to serve on the Merit Selection committee to help them with the selection of a Federal Magistrate Judge on a number of occasions, including serving as the chair of the committee.

Mike has successfully recovered many large settlements and verdicts for his clients. He is a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum which is a group of trial lawyers who have successfully obtained million or multi-million dollar recoveries. His large client recoveries, whether by verdict or settlement, have ranged from high six figures to over ten million dollars. These large cases included claims of many different types. Examples include auto accidents, drunk driver caused injuries, school accidents, electrocution injuries, medical malpractice, and class action claims for consumers and employees.
